This Week in Festivals - October 12

Although the peak of the U.S. music festival season has long passed, the next few weekends will wind down the season with a robust bang. A total of twelve festivals are happening across the country, and nine of these outstanding festivals can be found in the southeastern region of the country.

Athens Pop Fest is already well underway, kicking off on Tuesday, October 11 and running through Saturday, October 15. The Athens Pop Fest, of course, takes place in Athens, GA where they are celebrating its 8th annual festival. A few of the more notable performers include: Buxton, Wild Moccasins, Bob Mould, and Fishboy.

The Americana Music Festival & Conference kicks off today in Nashville, TN with a star-studded lineup performing through Saturday, October 15. This year's lineup includes the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, The Greencards, Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen, and Pokey Lafarge & The South City Three. I hope you enjoy this preview of Pokey Lafarge as much as I did.

Ozark, AR and the Yonder Mountain String Band play host to the Harvest Music Festival from October 13-15. Here, you will enjoy the down-home sounds of Railroad Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, Cornmeal, and of course the Yonder Mountain String Band. However, please believe me when I say that these performers are simply the tip of the proverbial great-artists-iceberg.

The DeLuna Music Fest in Pensacola, FL is proving to be one of the fastest growing multi-genre music festivals in the country. In only its 2nd year, the DeLuna Music Fest has exploded with over 85 performers playing a wide variety of music for every age and every taste in music upon six stages. How much more diverse could a music festival be with performers such as Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, The Infamous Stringdusters, Big Boi, and Girl Talk?

If you're looking for that special jazz fest, look no further than Clearwater, FL and plan to attend the 32nd Annual Clearwater Jazz Holiday. The festival begins tomorrow, October 13 and goes through Sunday, October 16. Prepare yourself to hear the incomparable Maceo Parker Band. Just give a listen to this awesome talent.

The Festivals Acadiens et Creoles is a family of festivals that is very close to the heart of those living in South Louisiana. These free festivals, often referred to as "The Cajun Festival," is scheduled for October 14-16 in Lafayette, LA. The entire festival experience allows festival-goers to experience Cajun culture, Cajun crafts, Cajun food and naturally, Cajun music all in the same place at the same time. This year's festival will honor the legendary Bruce Daigrepont. Bruce has proudly shared his Cajun music and Cajun heritage on the New Orleans music scene for many years at his regular gig at the famous Tipitina's. Joining Bruce at the festival, on one of three stages, will be Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, the GrammyAward winning BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, and Wayne Toups & ZydeCajun. The Cajun music tradition is being carried forward on the shoulders of a younger generation of musicians that include Feufollet and the Pineleaf Boys. Both of these bands will also be appearing at the Festivals Acadiens.

Right down the road, in the great Big Easy, another awesome music festival is hitting the streets of New Orleans. The Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival will be held on October 15 & 16. This year's headliners include New Orleans Blues Legend, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tab Benoit, and Bettye LaVette, just to name a few of the fantastic lineup. Amazingly, this festival is free to the public. The talented Marcia Ball will also make an appearance at the festival. Here's a preview.

The Richmond Folk Festival in Richmond, VA attracted more than 190,000 visitors last year, and has grown to become one of Virginia's most loved events. The festival entertainment provides a wide range of talent that is sure to please everyone. The Richmond Folk Festival begins on Friday, October 14 and ends on Sunday, October 16.

Celebrating its 21st Anniversary, the Gautier Mullet & Music Festival will be taking place on October 15 & 16 in Downtown Gautier, MS. The fine people of Gautier are very proud of their festival, and would love to invite everyone down to listen to some great local bands, and try out some of their scrumptious fried mullet.

Representing the midwest, Stik Nite Music Festival promises more than thirty midwest bands on three stages for a family-friendly and environmentally-conscious music festival. Head on over to The Water Bowl in Muncie, IN from October 14-16 where you will hear Ekoostik Hookah among many other fine bands. Organizers say that you will never see a better display of glowing energy, life, happiness and love than you will during the third annual celebration of Stik Nite!

Not to be outdone, Utopiafest in Utopia, TX is also celebrating its third annual music festival in the southwestern region of the U.S. The Four Sister Ranch will be hosting the festival on October 14 & 15, and should provide a grand old time with artists like Keller Williams, Dawes, Blitzen Trapper, and The Giving Tree Band. With more than 25 bands on two stages, there will be more than enough music to go around from a variety of different kinds of performers. Hope you enjoy this Dawes video

Last, but definitely not least, the West Coast offers the Treasure Island Festival in San Francisco on October 15 & 16. Possibly one of the most underrated festivals of the season, Treasure Island Festival has a solid lineup highlighting some of the most requested electronic and dance oriented artists on day one and some of the most celebrated and highly regarded indie artists on day two. Cut Copy, Chromeo, Shabazz Palaces, and The Antlers are simply a hint at what is in store for you at Treasure Island.
